Hard Rock Bet’s analysis of more than 3.3 million craps bets in Michigan and New Jersey found that the Field was the most frequently placed individual wager, ahead of every individual Place bet and the Pass Line. The sample covered bets placed from April through June, and the company released its findings on Sept. 30.
The study also found that higher-risk wagers made up 16% of all craps bets but generated about 38% of total casino profit from the game. Hard Rock Bet linked the popularity of Field, proposition and other higher-risk bets, alongside limited use of Odds bets, to players’ preference for excitement over more favourable odds.
Place bets accounted for 39% of all wagers, even though no single Place bet matched the Field’s popularity. One-roll proposition bets on 2, 3, 11 and 12 represented more than one-fifth of betting selections.
Place 6 and Place 8 accounted for 43.5% of Place bets, compared with 22.9% for Place 4 and Place 10. Under standard payouts, Place 6 and Place 8 carry an approximate 1.52% house edge, while Place 4 and Place 10 carry a 6.67% edge.
The Field resolves on the next roll. It wins on 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 or 12, and loses on 5, 6, 7 or 8. It covers 16 winning two-dice combinations and 20 losing combinations. Bally’s Atlantic City gaming guide lists Field payouts of 2 to 1 on 2 and 12, and 1 to 1 on 3, 4, 9, 10 and 11.
Pass Line was only the seventh most-used bet in the analysis, despite carrying an approximate 1.41% standard house edge. Players selected it almost four times as often as Don’t Pass, while Come bets were selected almost five times as often as Don’t Come, indicating a broad preference for betting with the shooter.
Odds bets made up only 2% of selections. These are additional bets made after a point is established behind Pass Line, Don’t Pass, Come or Don’t Come wagers, and Hard Rock Bet said they carry no house advantage on the additional amount. Many players made Pass Line bets without adding Odds, and only a small number used both.
Hard Rock Bet reported a 3.60% casino hold for online craps, compared with 3.18% for roulette. It also reviewed more than 180 craps-related Google search queries, finding that US searches for online craps odds rose 70% year on year and searches for craps strategy increased 60%. In both New Jersey and Michigan, 42% of searches concerned bets and payouts, the largest category in each state.
