New Jersey Launches Free RecoverMe Gambling-Help App

New Jersey has made RecoverMe, a free digital cognitive-behavioral-therapy app, available to residents and gambling customers seeking help to manage harmful gambling behaviour. The tool is the second free gambling-help service offered through the Division of Gaming Enforcement, after the financial-counselling provider GamFin.

The announcement came as the Attorney General and Division of Gaming Enforcement introduced mandatory, data-driven responsible-gaming requirements for online gambling operators on Oct. 20. Those rules make New Jersey the first US state to impose a uniform, enforceable framework requiring operators to identify, assess and intervene with customers who may be at risk.

RecoverMe lets users gauge their gambling behaviour through validated assessment tools, undertake flexible sessions based on evidence-based therapy and track gambling habits. It also contains New Jersey-specific emergency support services for people in crisis.

Online gambling companies must appoint a responsible-gaming lead, use prescribed play thresholds and behavioural triggers, review customers who meet those criteria and place those found to show potential problem-gambling signs on an at-risk list. They must then apply one of three phases of intervention and offer resources, including live support where appropriate.

The RecoverMe announcement coincided with New Jersey making data-driven gambling safeguards mandatory for online operators, as this publication reported on Oct. 21. Before the new regulations, operators followed similar practices but did not face a uniform regulatory standard governing when they had to carry out further reviews and phased interventions.

New Jersey’s use of player data in responsible gaming predates the regulations. A Division of Gaming Enforcement initiative began on Jan. 1, 2023, after planning started in March 2022, requiring online wagering operators to analyse electronically held player data for signs of harm and conduct proactive outreach before behaviour escalated. Its progressive model ranged from automated outreach to a compulsory responsible-gaming video and direct contact from an operator’s responsible-gaming team.

RecoverMe expands a support offering begun in September 2025, when the division made GamFin available as a free, confidential financial-counselling service. GamFin provides private one-to-one online sessions with certified counsellors for people facing gambling-related financial difficulties, as well as partners and family members affected by someone else’s gambling. Sessions can address budgeting, debt management and plans to rebuild financial stability.

The state’s 2025 Responsible Gaming Task Force called for more accessible gambling-addiction services and statewide standardisation of responsible-gaming tools. The task force was created by Gov. Phil Murphy’s Executive Order No. 360 in June 2024.
